Starting Tuesday, August 10, 2021 we will begin our Cover Crop giveaway. We will be offering, for Bullitt County residents, up to 3 lbs. of seed to use as a cover crop in their garden. We have 3 varieties available: Austrian Winter Peas, Annul Ryegrass and Wheat. There are many benefits of using a cover crop on your garden plot. Cover crops help with soil erosion and compaction and may be left in the garden to be used as mulch and organic matter. Approximate coverage is 3 lbs. per 1000 square feet. Please have an estimate of the size of your garden when you come to pick up your seed so we may bag the amount you need. This is a first come, first served program. So, when the seed is gone, the program ends. If you have any questions, give us a call at 502-538-0628

The year is flying by and soon it will be time to close up our gardens for the year. Do you use a cover crop on your garden? Do you know the benefits of using cover crops? Cover crops help reduce soil erosion and compaction. It also adds organic matter to improve your soil. Here is a great publication about cover crops from the University of Kentucky. http://www2.ca.uky.edu/agcomm/pubs/id/id113/id113.pdf

Well, it's the start of our new fiscal year and we are excited to get started on some new programs. While many of our focuses are on farmers and agricultural producers, we don't want to forget our urban clients. Please drop us an email and let us know what type of conservation programs you are interested in. We would love to hear from you.
We are proud to announce the 4 recipients of our Annual Scholarship.
Soil Conservation Board Chairman, Bill Harned presented the Scholarship Certificate and $2000 check to the winners. Thanks to Judge Executive Jerry Summers and Bullitt County Fiscal Court for contracting with Countryside Industries for dead animal removal in the county. We have been without this much needed service for over a year. Thankfully, they saw the need and have stepped in to help. If you are a farmer, or horse owner, and have lost an animal, you can call Countryside directly to arrange for them to pick up. There is no cost for this service. Call 859-421-1867 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed on weekends and holidays. Please note that there will be some accessibility requirements that will need to be met for pickup.
